MYFREQ

HYROX TRAINING
SOUTH AFRICA.

HYROX is the standard for hybrid fitness. 8km of running. 8 stations. One complete test of everything you have built.

MYFREQ builds men 35+ for this race — and for the identity that training for it creates long before race day.

THE RACE THAT TESTS
EVERYTHING.

HYROX is a global fitness race held in arenas worldwide including South Africa. The format is identical at every event: run 1km, complete a station, run 1km, complete the next station — 8 times.

It cannot be won with only strength or only endurance. The athlete who runs well between stations and maintains station efficiency across 8 rounds is the one who performs.

For men over 35, HYROX is one of the most meaningful performance standards available. It has Masters categories, a clear ranking system and races in South Africa.

THE RACE GIVES
TRAINING MEANING.

Most men over 35 know they should train. Very few have a compelling reason that makes the hard sessions non-negotiable.

A race on the calendar changes that. Every session has a purpose. Every missed workout has a cost. HYROX is a deadline that forces a man to become the athlete his training promises.

BUILD EVERYTHING
THE RACE DEMANDS.

01

RUNNING BASE

Zone 2 running, intervals and race-specific pacing. Build the engine that makes running between stations feel controlled, not desperate.

02

STRENGTH WORK

Posterior chain, pushing and grip. The strength that makes sled work, farmers carry and wall balls efficient rather than draining.

03

STATION PRACTICE

Skill under fatigue. Each station has technique requirements that compound under race conditions. Practice matters.

04

RACE STRATEGY

Pacing, transition speed, early station management and the mental discipline to hold form in rounds 6, 7 and 8.

MOST COMMON
HYROX MISTAKES.

01

Running too little

The most common error from gym-first athletes. Running once a week will not build the aerobic engine HYROX demands. Two to three dedicated running sessions per week is the minimum during preparation.

02

Running too hard

Every run at maximum effort builds anaerobic fitness and depletes recovery capacity. Zone 2 base work is where aerobic efficiency is built. The ability to sustain pace across 8km of broken running is an aerobic quality — not an anaerobic one.

03

Ignoring recovery

HYROX preparation at Masters level is high load. Without sleep, deload weeks and deliberate recovery management, the training accumulates as fatigue. Fatigue does not produce fitness — adequate recovery does.

04

Training randomly

Random training produces random results. HYROX rewards athletes who have trained the specific demands of the race — specific distances, specific station weights, specific combinations under fatigue. Without a structured plan, preparation is incomplete regardless of training volume.

05

Never simulating race conditions

The ability to execute a functional station immediately after running a kilometre is a specific skill. It is not developed by training running and stations in isolation. Race simulations — run plus stations in sequence — must be in the programme before race day.

WHY MYFREQ USES
HYROX AS ITS PROOF.

HYROX is not the endpoint of the MYFREQ system. It is the proof of concept — the race that validates whether the training, nutrition and recovery protocols are working at the level they claim to.

HYROX demands all of it simultaneously. You cannot run a competitive Masters time without strength. You cannot run it without endurance. You cannot sustain race preparation without discipline and recovery. The race reveals the work.

WHAT DOES YOUR
TIME MEAN?

SUB 2:00

FIRST FINISHER

Cross the line with confidence. A credible first HYROX for a man who has trained consistently for 12 to 16 weeks.

SUB 1:30

COMPETITIVE

A strong HYROX. Places well in the Masters division. Requires deliberate hybrid programming and race-specific preparation.

SUB 1:20

ELITE MASTERS

The MYFREQ target. Requires year-round hybrid training, structured recovery and a dialled nutrition strategy.

What is HYROX?

HYROX is a global fitness race that combines 8km of running (8 × 1km) with 8 functional fitness stations: ski erg, sled push, sled pull, burpee broad jumps, rowing, farmers carry, sandbag lunges and wall balls. It requires strength, endurance, athleticism and mental discipline simultaneously.

When is HYROX South Africa?

HYROX South Africa events are held in Johannesburg and Cape Town. The Johannesburg race is typically in November. Check the official HYROX website for current dates and registration.

How do I train for HYROX?

HYROX training requires a combination of running base work, strength training (particularly posterior chain, core and pushing strength), and station-specific conditioning. Hybrid training — combining strength and endurance — is the most effective approach.

How long does it take to prepare for HYROX?

A first-time finisher with a general fitness base can prepare in 12 to 16 weeks. A man targeting a sub 1:30 time needs 16 to 24 weeks of structured hybrid training. Chasing sub 1:20 or competing at a high Masters level requires a year-round approach.

Is HYROX suitable for men over 40?

Yes. HYROX has a dedicated Masters 40–44 and 45–49 age category. Many of the most competitive athletes in HYROX South Africa compete in the Masters division. Age is not a barrier — it is just a category.
